Rumors abound that Daley Plaza is now outfitted with its very own hotspot. Others, however, have indicated that the hotspot was inaccessible when put to the test.

Wireless access has been observed in-action at Seattle's Best Coffee, on Chicago avenue. The staff wasn't aware of the network, so apparently it's not a pay-to-play network. It may be bleedover from the nearby college campus.

My hopes are dashed. McD's still doesn't get it; according to the FAQ on the McDWireless website, service will not be free...
Q5: How much will this service cost?
A5: Each of our service providers has different pricing plans. Details are available in participating restaurants.
So not only are they charging for wireless, but the network isn't unified? I can't buy a subscription and get wireless at any McD's? Who does this appeal to?

A recent Wired article discusses the merits of free Wi-Fi access to businesses that want to increase revenue.
The main argument, which I like, is that a pay-for-use Wi-Fi service is much more expensive to operate than a free Wi-Fi service, while a free Wi-Fi service draws more customers. Therefore, the net profit generated by a pay Wi-Fi service is far lower than the net profit generated by a free hotspot.
Listen Up, Chicago!

A small, new WiFi provider named facefive has been popping up in coffee shops throughout Chicago. The pricing seems to work well; apparently you can choose ad-hoc service or (for the truly caffinated), get an unlimited monthly subscription.
Service starts at $3 for one hour.
